The Downtown Shopping Area is part of the Terrell Historical District. Our downtown boulevard echoes an earlier time with vintage lighting and brick planters.
Terrell was named a Main Street City in 1985. As a result, more than than $4 million has been spent on renovations, including new sidewalks, planter boxes, and nostalgic lighting, reflecting the city’s commitment to retaining the charm of yesteryear while enhancing commercial activity in the central business district.
Several historic buildings have been updated to provide modern offices and attractive shopping. Owner-renovated storefronts add to the appeal of the area. One business owner transformed the Iris Theater, built in 1925, into a retail shop, re-creating the look and feel of the old theater in a small area in the store. Visitors to the shop can watch vintage movies several times a month, sitting in original seats.
Visit downtown for a variety of retail shops, professional offices, museums, and restaurants. Don’t miss the Heritage Museum in the old Carnegie Library and the completely restored Brin Opera House (now an office building).
