Lakes Regional MHMR Center

Lakes Regional MHMR Center provides in-home and out-of-home care for the mentally challenged and offers community eduction programs to increase understanding in the general population. Lakes Regional supports patients and their families by providing adaptive devices that help maintain a level of function in the home. Skilled teams assist with housing, psychosocial training, screening, monitoring, and vocational training. In addtition to its day facillities, Lakes Regional offers two group homes in Terrell. STAR Services, a program for at-risk children ages 7-17 is offered in cooperation with the Texas Department of Regulatory Services.

Terrell State Hospital

TSH offers services for persons with mental illness and mental retardation to enable them to make choices that result in lives of dignity and increased independence. Terrell State Hospital is a 316-bed, JCAHO accredited and Medicare certified, psychiatric Hospital operated under the direction of the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (TXMHMR). The hospital provides services to individuals within a 22-county, 14,622 square mile area including Bowie, Camp, Cass, Dallas, Delta, Ellis, Fannin, Franklin, Henderson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Morris, Navarro, Rains, Red River, Rockwall, Smith, Titus, Van Zandt, and Wood counties. Services are provided for children ages 6 to 12 years, adolescents ages 12 to 18 years, and adults. Programs include acute care, an intensive behavioral program, medical services, forensic care for inmates of state correctional institutions, intermediate care, a “cottage” program for adult life skills, and a research center. In Fiscal Year 1999, the hospital had 1993 admissions, provided 121,078 days of inpatient service, and had an average daily census of 332 patients.
